Chapter 5

He snapped the cover of the box shut and tucked it deep in his pocket as he whirled round, intending to pretend the voice was just his imagination. As he stepped over the threshold, blatantly ignoring the stinging chill the door knob, he heard the voice once more before the heavy-set door slammed shut and the sound reverberated down the hallway.

Something’s coming…

Yesung plodded numbly forward, trying hard to push away the fact that he had heard someone whisper his name. He knew that there was nobody there and he knew that it was impossible for someone to sneak up on him and vanish because there is nowhere else to go besides back to the long, dim hallway he was standing in.

He recalled how the wispy strands of that haunting voice crept to his ears, making the hairs on the back of his neck stand, making him feel as if someone was right there behind him, running cold, pale fingers up his shaky spine.

He could still remember the heavy weight in his heart, the feeling as if something was going to befall him or someone around him. He could still remember feeling as if the words were true.

Something’s coming…

Something’s coming…

Something’s coming…

Something in his head clicked and he set off at a faster pace. He knew that he had to find Ryeowook and find that exit.

And fast.

He sprinted down the dark labyrinth. His shoes pounded on the floor, the rhythm matching that of his heartbeat. Thumps echoed off the walls which seem to be closing in, edging closer and closer, as if to engulf Yesung completely.

He twisted round another corner and then he saw it.

A silver glint.

He stopped in his tracks.

He cursed at the lack of lighting as he tried to make out the faces of the two approaching silhouettes.

But when he heard those high-pitched gasps and saw that pale, panicked face, Yesung lurched forward.

He barely glanced backwards when he felt a sharp sting against the back of his neck. He winced out of instinct but he gave the crumpled body in his arms his full attention. He had his arms under the shoulders and he heaved, forcing himself to bear both of their weights.

He looked down upon his dongsaeng’s upturned face and he felt his heart twang when he saw a pale, sweaty form with panicked eyes and a tortured expression.

Yesung could almost feel the person gaining up on them, almost feel a hot breath against his neck. It made him move faster, his mind bent on just getting them out of the wretched place. He did not know where he was going so when he finally saw a green and white exit sign shining like a beacon of light, relief flooded into his system and he unknowingly slowed his footsteps.

A bad mistake.

Behind him, the man wielding the deadly weapon lunged forward.

Perhaps it was of pure coincidence or perhaps luck was just shining on their side, he fell, his sword falling short of its mark, just a mere inch from Ryeowook’s side.

Yesung reached backwards and kicked at the man’s hand which was reaching out towards the sword. The latter recoiled and made to stand up but Yesung gave a swift swipe at his knees before hastily kicking the sword as far away from the man as it could go.

Satisfied with his work and knowing that he really did not have any time to spare now, Yesung shifted Ryeowook once more and set off at a limping run towards the heavy metal door which was the only way out. He jammed his palm down on the lever and slammed his shoulders on the door, cursing at its slowness.

Only when he managed to get the both of them out of the corridor did he turn back and throw the door shut once more. He had left Ryeowook at the side and the latter was leaning against the wall, head thrown back and a steady bead of sweat at his temple.

Yesung was still up against the door as it juddered violently, the other party banging furiously on the door. He dug his heels to the ground and with his whole weight against the door; he reached up with one hand and fumbled with the cold silver bolt before sliding it quickly into place.

Yesung tugged at Ryeowook’s sleeve, shaking him a little but the latter seemed not to recognize him.

No response.

“Come on, let’s get you home.”

No response.

Yesung held Ryeowook close as he guided them through the crowd and back to where the other worried members were.

“Jongwoon ah! Ryeowook ah! Where have you been?! We’ve been worried sick –”

Leeteuk stopped short at the sight of a disheveled Yesung who had blood slowly trailing down his pale neck and holding up a Ryeowook who was barely conscious of their presence.

Donghae, who was previously rattling off about how the aliens might have kidnapped them, grew silent and serious. He strode forward with Sungmin close behind and they helped the two out of the theatre and into the van.

There was a flurry of movement as the other three members climbed into the van after them.

The sky above was growing steadily redder and the heavens rumbled darkly, as if showing their displeasure.

The journey back to the dorm was silent, the mood subdued.

When Leeteuk pulled into a parking lot, he made no move to switch off the engine. He ran his hand over his face and turned back, eyeing his dongsaengs with tired, worried eyes.

“How is he?”

Yesung turned towards Ryeowook’s direction as Sungmin spoke softly to Ryeowook, his hand shaking Ryeowook’s own.

There was no response.

Ryeowook continued to stare glassily out of the window which had frosted over in several areas, the usual smile in his eyes dim like a dying fire.

A cold breeze soughed and whistled through the night. Crisp dead leaves scurried in packs along the pavement. The thin, sentinel trees seem to be in a slumber, with only occasional whispering of the leaves.

The only sounds from the 11th floor dorm were the quiet strums from Sungmin’s guitar, the faint trails of Eunhyuk and Donghae’s conversation and the random huffs and grunts Kyuhyun made while battling on Starcraft.

Even from his position in the kitchen, Yesung could hear Leeteuk’s laughter from upstairs and Heechul’s faint chortles which followed. He paid no attention as he scrolled down the page and added an ornament or two to his Cyworld page.

As the page loaded, his mind could not help but drift back to when they were still in the theatre…

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, feeling frustrated and confused.

“Still thinking about it, hyung?”

Yesung looked up at Donghae.

“Yeah…Are you going up soon?”

“Yes. It’s late and Eunhyukkie fell asleep in the middle of our conversation.”

Donghae paused and a small crease appeared as he furrowed his brows together. He shuffled his feet sheepishly, tongue darting out to wet his lips.

Yesung nodded absentmindedly as he closed the browsers and made to shut his laptop. He froze when he heard what Donghae has to say.

“I…Hyung, don’t get me wrong but I just have this feeling…Eunhyukkie too….that something might happen tonight. So…be careful will you?”

And because Donghae hardly ever said something like this, Yesung felt his throat go dry.
